Apparently, Mazda nust unveiled the MX-5 RF. It’s a Miata with a fancy, over-complicated targa top!

I don't think anyone around here cares for the Miata.

What’s this? I’ve never heard of this company before!
What a fantastic looking little car - I’d love to know more!

There’s a saying about the Miata around here: It’s the answer to every question that nobody asked. Too small and weak to be any good.

You sure that’s not a Triumph? Probably going to break.

For a brief, beautiful moment, the world thought that maybe, just maybe, we were getting a hardtop Miata. And then the scowly bastard driving it pressed a button, and like our hopes and dreams, the roof came apart, stowed itself in the trunk, and turned out to be needlessly complicated and heavy without adding much, if any, chassis rigidity.
Oh, well.

Convertibles made into coupes don’t add much rigidity. If you want more rigidity get a rollbar and other assorted chassis braces. There's plenty to choose from.

I like it. The rear quarter window reminds me of my old 280z. Mine was rusted in half, unlike the pics below.

A hard top would have been awesome. The idea of a targa top is pretty cool, but why have all extra weight and parts. Corvettes have been getting by just fine with a simple lift off targa for decades. It works fine and has no parts to break.

I don't understand this. You get the coupe you wanted as long as you don't push that button. Put some tape over it or something. For those of who want it, it's a convertible too. Everybody wins! If it's weight you're worried about, well we can probably trust Mazda to keep the car well balanced and nimble. I doubt the top mechanism will ruin the handling. It was never going to be more rigid than the soft top on which it was based, and this certainly won't be less.

100 percent agree!

Gotta get some flares on that Miata!

Honestly if the hardtop looked like this I would consider greatly getting it. Also if it was a manually removable targa that would be better. But either way, the fast back greatly improved the looks.

For a while in the 90s the Vette targa was the #1 stolen car part. Classifieds in pretty much every town were filled with them...it was kind of hilarious. This solves that I guess.

Miatas are awful.

this looks cool but seems ridiculously dumb.
It is going to weigh more and still have 155hp.
Why do all that motion with EVERYTHING and not just make it a PRHT like the previous car?
To me a targatop is you take the center out and put it in the trunk or something like on a Supra. Otherwise it’s pointless to have a targa.

It’s not the coupe I wanted. It’s going to be minumum $30k for a car that weighs 100lbs more and still has 155hp.
It’s also not a convertible, the back still stays on. Targa cars are not vets, nobody thinks that.
It’s a completely pointless vehicle.

That makes sense, they wold be pretty easy to steal and they go for a good amount of money.

Like I said: over-complicated. I like the idea of a simpler, manual targa top but the convenience of the mechanism is a nice touch. It looks cool in motion, too.

Looks like a Del Sol from the future.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’ll probably still be a great car. But I really am baffled by the decision to make it a power targa top. The back hoop, which could have been a structural member, is now attached to an entirely unnecessary (IMO) and complicated power lift mechanism,
Personally, if they had made the rear section fixed with just a manually removable targa panel, I’d be a lot more excited about it, even if it’s not quite what I would like to see Mazda put out.
Still, an expanding market of enthusiast-oriented RWD sports cars is not a bad thing, even if they don’t come with roofs that I like.

I think it looks great, but I think it would’ve been better to release this option alongside a Mazdaspeed model with the extra grunt to overcome any weight penalties.
In any case, I think the ND generation is due for a Speed model - even just getting it to the 200hp mark would be excellent.

The power part doesn’t confuse me, but the targa part kinda does. I can see people not wanting to have to handle a panel manually, but if you’re going to remove the top for the open air feel, I would think you would remove the whole thing. But that is just my aesthetic.

The Miata coupe might be a Toyota.
